21. Silvertown UK, Horninglow Road North, Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire. Thanks to Claire for letting me know about these. Around the factory entrance are various mercury lanterns, mainly all GEC, on yellow columns. The columns have no door, and instead, a fuse box is installed by the base or fastened a little way down from the lantern. I don't know how old the factory is, but the lanterns are certainly all quite old. They all still work, and are still all mercury!

Since these pictures were taken, the Silvertown factory site has been redeveloped for housing. Consequently, all of these installations are now confined to history.

Firstly, we have a Thorn Gamma 3 with a peculiar strut on the side of the column. In the background is another, also with this strut.

Inside the main gate are two GEC Clearmains. Only one is shown here, as I wasn't allowed in the main factory complex, and I couldn't get a good enough zoom on my camera to photograph the other.

Finally, along the main drive is this gearless Alpha 7 (thanks to Bob and Davy for identification). One thing I am sure of is that when the lantern was installed, the wiring wasn't quite so bad! My guess is that this control box is not as old as the Osira box in #2, as it is much less decorative and GEC are the only company mentioned on the box. Again, there's a strut at the back of the column.
