32b. Brickyard Cottages, Ashbourne Located on the communal walkways surrounding these flats are two Thorn QCG7 aluminium columns supporting rare Gamma 7 post-top lanterns. These columns are likely to be contemporary with the age of the flats. A further two QCG7 columns in the complex are now topped with globe lanterns but are likely to have also supported Gamma 7s when new. This type of lantern's rarity can be attributed to its special fixing that only permitted its installation on this style of column - conversely, this style of column can only accommodate the Gamma 7 and thus is also rather rare - the globe lanterns are fitted by means of spigot adaptors fitted to the wide column shafts. The lamp type of all of these lanterns is unknown, and there is no obvious means of switching the lights either; it is possible that time switches are installed in the column bases.
