4j. Museum Square, Derby City Centre. Probably the last gas lantern and column in Derby. The mantles are still in the lantern, as is the piping, but unfortunately something has happened to it and it is quite bent up. Vandalism is obviously a possible reason for this, especially as the decorative finial on the canopy looks as if it has been knocked, however the glass panels are all intact. The lantern does not work - there is a time switch inside which probably requires winding up, but I think that the gas supply to the column has been disconnected. What surprises me is that the three other lanterns and columns are all a lot newer - they are of the same style (possibly made by Mike Smith Designs), but have SON lamps fitted, and do work.

Since these photographs were taken, the square has undergone some refurbishment, and these installations are no longer to be found.
