5. Station Rd, Mickleover. The old lanterns on this road were mainly Thorn Alpha 1s, an example of which can be seen on the Survivors page, but sadly, they were deemed to be too dim due to the large and well-established trees that run along parts of the road. The new lanterns are Thorn Civics with 150w SON-T lamps. The new columns are 10m high, whereas the old ones were only 8m with long outreach brackets, however brackets are not being used to support the Civics, as they can be mounted post-top. From what I have seen so far, the new lanterns do not appear to be any brighter than the old ones and also the higher columns will surely mean that the lanterns actually shine into the trees far more than the Alpha 1s did. Only time will tell, but as you can probably gather, I really like the new installations!
These two pictures show two of the four new columns that were installed on the 27th October 2004. Before the column in the left hand photograph had been installed, an MA 90 had been in use - obviously a replacement for an Alpha 1 at some point.
The left hand column again after nightfall:
Pictures of the replacement work can be seen here.
