5e. Leylands Estate, off Broadway, Darley Abbey At the entrance to this 1950s' housing estate is a very unusual column and top-entry lantern integrated into a bench. I assume that the installation dates from this era as well. Unfortunately, the lantern has been modified since it was first installed - a bowl from a Thorn Gamma 6 lantern has been placed inside it, and a 35 Watt SOX lamp has been fitted. As far as I know, the lantern no longer works - in fact, it's a mystery how it ever worked at all as the column appears to be a solid block of wood and yet no cables can be seen fixed to it.

Externally, the lantern was little changed by 2020.

The presence of an electrical enclosure to the rear of the wooden post suggested that some work had taken place in the intervening years, however.

Peering up into the bowl confirmed this - the single SOX lamp seen in 2005 had been replaced with two compact fluorescent lamps.
