80. Mount Carmel Street, City Centre. Located on the steps leading to Burton Road is a cast iron column incorporated into the centre handrail with top-entry heritage lanterns fitted. The lanterns are presently fitted with mercury lamps; but they were fitted with CDO-ET lamps when first installed (the control gear is located in a box above the column). The reason for the change is that the lanterns are difficult to work on due to the steps; and mercury lamps are usually long lasting. The lanterns were installed when the lighting along the rest of the street was upgraded - previously there had been a single top-entry lantern fitted - from memory this resembled a Beta 4 but I cannot remember what it was for definte. The lanterns are controlled by a time switch positioned in the base of a nearby column.
