Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Farmhouse Road, Sinfin

The fact that half of Farmhouse Road was not relit came as something as a surprise to me, as the section that did undergo relighting for the PFI was home to columns that were newer than the section where the lighting was not altered. The table below details the lighting along this road as it appeared in 1997; the lighting coloured grey was replaced by the PFI.

The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 4th June 2017.

The surviving lighting all compromised 8 m steel columns supporting Philips MA 90 90 Watt SOX lanterns.

The columns are of the 'classic' Derby design, with the bracket emerging at a right angle from the top of the column, and a long section of webbing beneath as a way of providing support.

In Derby, this style of column and bracket was most commonly seen supporting Thorn Alpha 1 lanterns, with the photocell mounted on the flat section at the top of the column.

Sinfin seems to have been a somewhat different case, however - instead of Alpha 1s, the Sinfin columns supported GEC Z9454s, with their own photocells. Archival photographs suggest that the Z9454s replaced Z8430CMs (another GEC product) attached to the same brackets, and possibly running 250 Watt MBF lamps, in the mid-1980s. I have always known these particular columns to support MA 90s; perhaps this was the last section of road in the suburb to be relit. The lack of a front bowl clip on this particular MA 90 suggests that it dates from the early 1990s - later models saw a clip introduced in this portion of the bowl as a way of improving the overall IP rating of the lantern.

One column (and bracket) on the road is of a slightly different design, and may have been an early replacement for a damaged right-angled column.

A PFI-specification Royce Thompson SC1000 photocell controls this lantern.
