Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Gleneagles Close, Mickleover

This road was constructed in the mid-1980s, and the current system of lighting also dates from then. I was surprised that this estate was not relit as part of the mass-replacement work in the early years of the PFI, as roads of a similar age in Oakwood were. Still, at least this ensured that the road was in virtually as-built condition.

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 19th September 2015.

A 5 m tubular steel column supporting a Thorn Beta 5 lantern was first from Muirfield Drive.

The lantern's bowl showed slight signs of water ingress.

A Thorn Gamma 6 was fitted to a mid-hinged column on a footpath leading away from the road.

The lantern was fitted with a Royce Thompson SC1000/SAV 35 Lux photocell; the same as what was fitted to all of the other installations on this estate at the time of photographing.

A slightly later design of Beta 5 was installed nearby.

This lantern's bowl was damaged, allowing for dirt to accumulate within the lowest portion of the bowl.
