Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

The Green, Mickleover

The equipment being removed consisted of the following items in 1997:

Seq. No. Lamp Number Location Lamp Type Watt Isolation Point
1 36026 OS NOS 2/4 SXPL1 35
2 36028 OS NOS 6/8 SXPL1 35
3 36030 OS NO 11 SXPL1 35

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 28th May 2011.

As this road falls within the oldest part of Mickleover (a designated Conservation Area), the new lighting columns were slightly different to the typical installations installed throughout the rest of the City under the PFI - firstly, the columns were painted black, and were fitted with Metcraft 'Victoria' post-top lanterns; each running 45 Watt CPO-TW.

The first outgoing column from The Hollow, a sleeved Stanton 7 concrete, supported a Philips MI 26 35 Watt SOX lantern. This was the setup for the other two old columns on this road as well. The replacement column was still awaiting its lantern at the time of photographing.

The new lanterns are fitted with miniature photocells (Royce Thompson Microstar 2000s) that are attached to one of the four sides of their canopies.

Some of the new columns were spaced away from their outgoing counterparts.

In the days of gas lighting, the decorative finials attached to the canopies of this style of lantern were actually vents; in order to allow the fumes created by the burning gas mantles to be released.

The last outgoing column was installed alongside (the appropriately-named for the weather at the time!) Sunny Croft.

A Sirebeck S300 photocell (possibly original to when the column was sleeved and the MI 26 fitted) still activated and deactivated this lantern as necessary.

The final new column was installed just before the bend in the road that then led on to Orchard Street.
