Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Wentworth Close, Mickleover

This road was constructed in the mid-1980s, and the current system of lighting also dates from then. I was surprised that this estate was not relit as part of the mass-replacement work in the early years of the PFI, as roads of a similar age in Oakwood were. Still, at least this ensured that the road was in virtually as-built condition.

The following photographs were taken on Tuesday, 2nd May 2017.

Whilst the roadway was lit with Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX lanterns fitted to 5 m tubular steel columns, the footpath link was lit with two Philips MI 26, and one Thorn Gamma 6, lanterns (also 35 Watt); all attached to 5 m mid-hinged columns made by Fabrikat. The columns fitted with the Philips lanterns (possibly) once supported Gamma 6s as well, as all other footpath columns on this estate have the Thorn lanterns fitted; however, if this did occur, the columns would have needed brackets fitting, owing to the side-entry mounting of the MI 26s.

If the MI 26s were replacements, their rather grubby canopies suggest that this was some time ago.
