Local Indo AIR1+s

A short footpath linking Woodcote Way, Hedgevale Close and Fulbrook Road on Derby's 'Heatherton' housing estate saw the like-for-like replacement of the 5 m mid-hinged columns supporting 35 Watt SOX lanterns with 6 m columns supporting AIR1+s in early 2017; possibly as a means of trialling these LED lanterns before more (potential) widespread use in the future.

When installed atop a 6 m column, these minute lanterns look somewhat out of proportion.

The main reason for the lantern's small size (427 mm [16.18 in] × 200 mm [7.87 in] × 110 mm [4.33 in], and having a gross weight of 3.5 kg [7.71 lb]) can be attributed to the 'driverless' technology employed to operate the LEDs (24, in this case); essentially, the lantern exists to support the LEDs and a photocell, if fitted, and not a lot else. Speaking of switching options, these lanterns are probably fitted with miniature photocells rated at 35 Lux (this being the default switching arrangement, although a NEMA socket is available as an alternative), but cannot be seen from the ground.

The next installation along the footpath, pictured looking back towards the above installation.

At some point in the past, tongue-in-cheek comments relating to Thorn's Civic and Triumph lanterns bearing an apparent resemblance to items of footwear in their design were made by 'some' in the collecting fraternity; I would like to suggest a motion calling for these comments to be withdrawn, having now seen the Air1+ (stand on your head and look at the image below - not recommended for situations where others can see you doing this).

Unusually, the grub screws securing the lantern to the column are located on the side of the lantern, as opposed to being situated on the back.

The narrow profile of the lantern is best appreciated in a view looking at it from the front. The Indo logo is displayed prominently on the portion of the lantern between the LEDs and column.
