Local Philips Modenas

Several Modenas (of the larger SGP 682 variety) could be found at the busy Cock Pitt junction in Derby City Centre. These were installed in the late 2000s as part of work to transform the former roundabout at this location into a multi-way signal-controlled junction. They survived until the 2nd March 2025, when they were replaced with an LED alternative; fortunately, one of the removed examples was saved into my Collection. Five SGP 681 Modenas were installed at the end of Roundhouse Road in the City, in conjunction with the restoration of the eponymous former Midland Railway roundhouse and administration building in the late 2000s. One of these was lost after its column was knocked down in 2018.

The Cock Pitt lanterns were fitted to quadruple-arm outreach brackets, which are mounted to 15 m base-hinged columns.

The Modena's design is heavily influenced by the design of sister lantern, the Iridium. Indeed, the bowls and reflectors appear to be identical.

The lanterns all run SON lamps.

Looking into the distance, two further columns supporting Modenas can be seen.

An impromptu meeting with representatives of the local bird council appeared to be in full session at the time!

The smaller Modenas are attached post-top to tapering columns that surround a small roundabout at the end of road. Derby's railway station is visible in the background.

These are likely to be similar in size to the SGS 253 version of the Iridium.

Unlike the examples at the Cock Pitt, these Modenas run CPO-TW (Cosmopolis White) lamps of 90 or 140 Watt.

The lantern fitted to the column that is positioned behind the station has a rear shield fitted; presumably, to reduce glare to train drivers, rather than having the potential for the light output to cause potential confusion over a signal aspect colour, as SOX (low pressure sodium) lanterns might.

These lanterns feature curved glass bowls, but the shields are deep enough to accommodate the taller polycarbonate bowls too.
