111FA. Off Kinsall Green, Relay Park, Hockley, Tamworth, Staffordshire With thanks to Leo Conway for informing me of these Survivors. Installed adjacent the forecourt for a former petrol station complex (now, a car sales centre) are two relatively short sheet steel (tongue twister alert) columns, both of which support Thorn Gamma 6 post-top lanterns. These are the wide-canopied type with shallow base castings. Ordinarily, the latter might signify that any discharge lamp control gear was situated remotely; typically, within the column base, but as these columns do not have bases, they probably just ran standard GLS (incandescent tungsten filament) lamps originally - the present lamp type (assuming that they are still in use) is not known.

The forecourt area is located on a short spur of Kinsall Green; formerly, this formed part of the historical A5 Watling Street, prior to the road being re-routed, and a Cat's Eye reflector remains embedded in the tarmac (just out of view to the left). From viewing this historical map, the block paved area upon which the two columns are installed was already in place by 1973. The Cat's Eye may, therefore, have indicated the entrance to the garage, along with several others that have since been removed.

The bowls are in generally good condition, with a few vertical cracks having appeared in the acrylic.

While the base castings and columns are now painted green (formerly, red), the canopies have never been repainted, and the black paint applied originally is now long gone.

The second column is to be found at the other end of short footway section.

When viewed from below, the rather misshapen canopy becomes obvious.
