174CD. Gilpin Close / Old Bromford Lane, Ward End, Birmingham With thanks to Leo Conway for discovering these Survivors. Situated alongside disused garage areas on both of these two adjoining roads are 15 ft (5 m) Revo tubular steel columns; both of which support a 'Hatfield' / 'Precinct' post-top lantern - a design that was, formerly, a common sight on many residential streets throughout Birmingham. These two examples seem to have survived thanks to their being off the main thoroughfare of the two roads; indeed, the Old Bromford Lane example is within the garage area itself, but is engulfed in a Buddleia bush that has since grown up within the disused space.

A sign of the abandonment on the Gilpin Close example is that the column is still painted brown from the previous Birmingham street lighting 'livery', although this is flaking heavily.

Despite having become surplus to requirements, the lantern is fully intact.

There is still an 80 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamp visible inside the lantern.

Such is the level of growth of the Buddleia bush that only the lantern is visible on the Old Bromford Lane example.

Google Street View imagery captured in 2008 shows the lantern to be operating in daylight - even by then, the garage complex seems to have been closed.
