174FE. Off Kineton Road, Olton, Solihull, West Midlands With thanks to Leo Conway for informing me of this Survivor. Situated on the access road to the Langley School is a 15 ft (5 m) Stanton concrete column supporting a CU Phosco P107 post-top lantern. This particular example appears to be a relatively modern example, running a 50 - 70 Watt tubular high pressure sodium (SON-T) lamp, although 80 - 125 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) and 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) options were also available, along with standard GLS (incandescent tungsten filament). The column is likely to have supported another post-top lantern originally, and more identical examples existed within the school grounds, but have all, since, been replaced in their entirety - presumably, this sole-surviving installation was forgotten. With the school opening in 1974, the approximate age of this column can be determined.
The oblong object positioned on the column shaft is a vehicle-activated "Slow down" sign.
What appears to be a Tridonic ballast is visible on the inside of the lantern base.
Visible within the internal refractor ring is the SON-T lamp.
The original Stanton door seems to have been lost over time, with a panel made to the same dimensions fitted instead, and secured with two Tespa bands.
