31FA. New Street, Harvills Hawthorn, West Bromwich, Sandwell, West Midlands Located opposite Tunnel Road is an 8 m Stainton sheet steel column supporting a much older Revo Lucidor 'A' lantern, for 90 Watt SOX (and formerly, 140 Watt SO/H / SOI/H and 100 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium)) lamps. Presumably, the original 1960s' lantern was in good enough condition to be re-used when the column was replaced in the late 1980s or early 1990s, and so, rather than go to the additional expenditure of using a new lantern, this (and the separate lamp control gear) was transferred. This arrangement was not unique to this installation either - the following column north was exactly the same (though its Lucidor has now been replaced). A possible explanation for this sole lantern's current survival is that high voltage electricity transmission cables pass quite closely overhead, although they do look to be far enough away for the lantern to be exchanged safely (not that I would wish to be the one responsible for sounding the death knell for it!).

The combination of the older lantern and newer column makes for quite an unusual sight - I saw this installation from some distance away when driving down the road, and thought that the lantern had a distinctly SOX-like appearance amongst the sea of LED lanterns.

These Stainton brackets are distinctive in that they form part of the installation's overall height.

Although the lantern's polycarbonate bowl has yellowed, and a small crack is present on the facing side, everything is intact. A Royce Thompson P42 photocell detector still provides the nightly automatic switching. Although a version of the Lucidor with the lamp control gear housed within it was produced, it was a very bulky lantern, whereas the separate gear versions appeared far more streamlined.
