57AH. Crewe Green Road, Crewe, Cheshire With thanks to Leo Conway for discovering this Survivor. Positioned on a splitter for the roundabout's entry / exit roads for the University of Buckingham's Crewe Campus is a 5 m sheet steel column supporting an Atlas / Thorn Gamma 8 / AEI Ashby post-top lantern, for 60 - 200 Watt GLS (incandescent), 80 - 125 Watt MBF (mercury vapour), or 60 Watt SO/H / SOI/H / 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamps. The combination of this column and lantern suggests that the Gamma 8 may have been installed here second-hand, as the column is a 1980s' product, whereas the lantern was removed from Thorn's product line-up after 1978. On the other approaches to the roundabout, where a similar setup exists, standard refuge beacons are employed instead.
The column supports brackets for attaching a banner - I hope that it was stress-tested to take this additional loading!
Whereas some Gamma 8s were designed to fit on the non-standard triangular spigots of aluminium 'Leader' columns, this one uses a circular spigot entry, allowing it to fit to the standard 76 mm (3 inch) diameter columns.
The column is a Stainton product, and includes threaded holes in its shaft for accommodating grub screws that would secure a side-entry bracket, as an alternative to using a post-top lantern.
