Off Queen Street, Newtown, Chester, Cheshire With thanks to LeoLampposts for discovering these Survivors. Attached to the wall of a multi-storey car park are three Thorn Alpha 3 lanterns, for 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour), SON (high pressure sodium) or metal halide (MBI) lamps. The purpose here of the Alpha 3s is to provide illumination over the entrance and exit ramps of the car park, although the low mounting heights will mean that the amount of light produced is rather excessive for the task at hand. The Alpha 3s are likely to be original to when the car park was constructed, which, judging by its architecture, is likely to have been in the early-mid 1980s.
The three Alpha 3s are seen from the top of the ramp area, making the foreground lantern be at the lowest of the mounting heights.
Slight damage has occurred to this example's bowl, with a small area of the acrylic showing an impact crack.
A lamp can be glimpsed within the second lantern; this appears to be a tubular metal halide type.
The third lantern is seen from the same vantage point. Owing to this example being positioned lower down the wall (to take the decreasing height of the ramp into account), the top sections of this lantern are visible, revealing that while there are no NEMA photocell sockets fitted, the positions of where these would be placed are obvious on the rear castings, which would also house the lamp control gear on these examples.
The three lanterns are seen again from Canal Side. As this is set lower than the ramps are, from this angle, the lanterns appear at a more suitable mounting height.
The middle lantern is seen again from this alternative angle, with relatively low amounts of dirt ingress within the bowl.
