Off Pilsley Road, Danesmoor, Clay Cross, North East Derbyshire Situated at the HGV entrance to the DS Smith packaging factory is a 25 ft (8 m) Stanton 8 concrete column with a single side-entry outreach bracket and Atlas/Thorn Alpha 5 / AEI Amberline lantern, intended for running a single 135 Watt SOX (single-ended low pressure sodium) or 140 - 200 Watt SLI/H (linear low pressure sodium) lamp. The Amberline canopy and bowl were also used in sister lantern the Fleetwood, which could accommodate four 30 Watt MCF (linear fluorescent) lamps. Following the 2025 takeover of DS Smith by the US-based International Paper company, proposals to close the Clay Cross factory were unveiled, which if realised, could see the site cleared, and this column taken down - not that the lantern is likely to be in operation any longer anyway; Google Street View imagery captured in September 2021 reveals that a now-removed wooden pole positioned alongside the column supported two LED floodlights at the time.

The column is sandwiched between a small gatehouse building, and the security barrier.

The bracket is badly spalled at both ends - the internal steel pipe being exposed above the column, as well as to the right of the lantern.

Unusually for an Alpha 5, the Perspex bowl has become translucent from UV exposure. This prevents a positive identification of what lamp (or lamps) are fitted, if any.

The bowl's underside is ingrained with dirt, also preventing the interior from being seen clearly.

A rather sorry-looking GEC Z9464 (for 90 Watt SOX) lamps is attached to the building in the background.
