Off High Street, Harlesden, London Borough of Brent Situated in a compound used for car sales, on the corner of High Street and Furness Road, are two 5 m sheet steel columns, both of which support GEC Z8422 lanterns. The columns themselves may also be GEC products, and could date back to when the site was used as a filling station / repair garage, as this historical map indicates that once existed on the land. The Z8422 was designed to run (either) a 250 Watt or 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamp, with the lamp control gear being located within the lantern itself.

Floodlights attached to the perimeter fence suggest that these two installations have long since become disused.

As with the sister Z8420, Z8426 and Z8427 lanterns, the canopy hinges down from the aluminium casting that passes over it, when access to the lantern interior is required.

Flat glass covers are secured to the undersides of the canopies.

When photographed in December 2025, elliptical lamps remained fitted within the lanterns.

Remarkably, despite the bulkiness of control gear components when the Z8422 was launched in 1961, as part of GEC's wider 'Clearmain' range, the company's engineers produced a very streamlined design, with the ballast being housed in the lower portion of the casting, behind the canopy, and the capacitor positioned above, in line with the bracket entry.
