Off Pinnington Place, Roby, Huyton, Knowsley, Merseyside With thanks to AgentHalogen_87 for informing me of this Survivor. Located on the adjacent railway line (the Liverpool to Wigan or Manchester route) is a narrow 25 ft (8 m) tubular steel column supporting a 1970s' - 80s' GEC Z8536 lantern (often known as a 'Turtle' in Street Lighting Collector circles), with control gear intended for a running a 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) or SON (high pressure sodium) lamp installed with the lantern. The installation will date from when this part of Pinnington Place served as railway sidings for the nearby Huyton station, but was left over after the sidings were decommissioned, and the area re-purposed for housing.

The support structure is likely to be a much older product than the lantern itself is; the previous lantern may have been a Falks / Thorn Grenville, as these were commonly used around railway sidings and the like.

A length of piping is shaped to form a rudimentary swan neck bracket. If a Grenville were fitted here originally, the bracket would have had a 90 degree elbow attached at the end, to facilitate the top-entry lantern.

Despite the Z8536's bowl (or flat glass cover) having been lost, the lamp survived.

This looks to be a 250 Watt example.

The lampholder could be fixed in one of two positions; the higher one (as this one is) offering a cut-off light distribution, which makes sense, given its railway use, where cut-off lighting was preferred. In typical GEC methodology, with the lampholder in this position, the lantern part code would become Z8534.

A disadvantage of the lampholder being raised is evident here - the heat generated by the lamp has burnt away the white paint applied to that portion of the canopy interior.

A small fuse / former control gear box attached to the base of the pole carries the branding for C G Tagg Ltd, of Nottingham.

With the lantern's control gear being situated within the extended rear casting, any control gear that was installed within the enclosure was probably removed when the new lantern was installed.
