Newark Northgate Railway Station, off Lincoln Road, Newark-on-Trent, Newark & Sherwood, Nottinghamshire Situated on the island platform 2/3 are two long-abandoned ELECO 'ELECOSlim' concrete columns of very short height, although they may have been reduced slightly after being decommissioned, and are the only two that are still extant - this 1977 image reveals that not only were there many more of these columns originally, but that some were topped with GEC 'Clearspace' Z8288 post-top lanterns running two 80 Watt 5 ft (1500 mm) MCF/U (linear fluorescent) lamps, and had the station name detailed on the bowl, while those on this platform supported a similar type that did not feature the station name etching. Interestingly, only a year later, these remaining Z8288s had been replaced with the same type of 'blank' lantern - presumably, every column supported a GEC lantern when new.

The old column stands adjacent its modern Abacus base-hinged equivalent, looking decidedly unlike a lighting column here. The top appears to have been filled with cement to plug the hole that would have otherwise existed in the top of the shaft.

Only the sight of a small ELECO-branded inspection door revealed the concrete post's former purpose.

The column stump on the other side of the kiosk was a little more obvious as the door faced outwards here (both doors are facing north).

The right-hand side of the door aperture was damaged, but appeared to have been patched using more cement.
