Off Bellaport Road, Norton-in-Hales, Shropshire With thanks to AgentHalogen_87 for informing me of this Survivor. Located in the car park for the Hind's Head Public House is a 1960s' 25 ft (8 m) Stewarts & Lloyds tubular steel column supporting the original (A42.555) version of the Revo Lucidor lantern, which was intended to run an 85 - 140 Watt SO/H or SOI/H lamp, but would later have run a 55 - 90 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamp instead; the latter being the more likely candidate in this situation, owing to the mounting height. The presence of a floodlight installed further down the column shaft suggests that the Lucidor has fallen into disuse, and remains solely because of the difficulty involved in removing it.
Thankfully, the installation was pictured in early May, when the adjacent tree was only just starting to return to leaf - a few weeks later, and the lantern would have been engulfed by leaves, making photographing it rather more complicated.
The early Lucidors can be distinguished by the outreach bracket entering the lantern through the middle of the canopy. As this then required the bracket to be relatively straight, to avoid the pipe fouling the rear portion of the canopy, the design was altered quickly, with the bracket entry being relocated to the more conventional rear of the lantern instead.
The bowl itself remained unchanged between the revisions.
The column bases uses the classic Stewarts & Lloyds 'slotted' lock, where the key is placed through the slot that is visible towards the base of the door, and then rotated to allow an internal bracket that clamps the door into place ordinarily to be moved out of the way, allowing the door to be opened. The key then should stay engaged in the locking mechanism, providing a useful handle in lifting the door away from the column.
