Off Beeley Wood Lane, Middlewood, Fox Hill, Sheffield, South Yorkshire With thanks to Dwight for discovering these Survivors. Located on the access road to an industrial estate (formerly, the Union Carbide electrode factory) are two 6 m Stainton sheet steel columns, both fitted with lengthy double-arm outreach brackets, with all four brackets supporting a 1980s' Thorn Alpha 3 lantern, designed for running a 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour), SON (high pressure sodium) or MBI (metal halide) lamp. Such powerful lanterns are not, ordinarily, installed at this low mounting height, but here, they will have provided overall area lighting along with roadway illumination. There are a number of 8 m columns with single-arm brackets here too, and while these are fitted with other lanterns today, they too may have supported Alpha 3s originally.

Whilst the right-hand lanterns face over the roadway, the left-hand lanterns face a car park area.

Little extra height is added by the brackets.

None of the lanterns are fitted with any sort of photocell provision.

An elliptical lamp was visible in this lantern.

The four lanterns are in good condition, and aren't all that grubby either.

This bracket also serves as a support for an overhead cable.
