Dunford Road, Hubberton, Holme Valley, Holmfirth, Kirklees, West Yorkshire Attached to the wooden poles that also support the overhead electrical wiring along this portion of the road are a number of now-disused 135 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lanterns; new brackets supporting LED lanterns are installed a little further below them on each post. One reason for the old lanterns' retention will be the difficulty in removing them, owing to the surrounding overhead wiring being un-insulated, and thus, liable to cause shocks, though some examples have been removed successfully, leaving only their old brackets attached. This is also why the replacement lighting is installed at a lower level. Interestingly, the LED lanterns are not direct replacements for some of the older SOX lanterns - historical Google Street View imagery reveals that WRTL SRL 8 lanterns were at many of the locations, suggesting that the proximity issue has existed for many years, and that the SOX lanterns have been redundant for the same.
The first two poles to be seen when heading south along Dunford Road support Relite Hyperion lanterns; this view is looking north, back into Holmfirth.
There is a marked difference in overall outreach length between the new and old installations.
A lamp may still exist within the lantern, although this cannot be deduced for certain.
The LED light source itself is a fraction of the size of the old SOX lamp.
The second pole has a slight forward lean to it.
A diagonal strut provides additional support to the bracket.
A lamp does remain fitted in this lantern. The lack of photocell control suggests that the lighting could have been switch using a (now-decommissioned) fifth-core group-control system.
Meanwhile, the LED lantern uses a SELC / Westire 8480 one-part photocell.
Looking the other way, all wiring leading to the old bracket can be seen to have been removed. A cast iron GEC enclosure housing the lamp control gear that was positioned above the new bracket survived until some point after September 2009 but before June 2017.
Further up the hill, other redundant lanterns including an ELECO GR 150, more Hyperions and a Thorn Alpha 4 were all still fitted to their respective poles.
