Off Battlefield Road, Battlefield, Shrewsbury, Shropshire With thanks to LeoLampposts for informing me of this Survivor. Located on land that was once part of Shrewsbury's expansive Cattle Market is a 25 ft (8 m) tubular steel column that still, in 2026, supported a 1950s' Siemens-Ediswan 'Court' lantern, designed for running three 4 ft (1200 mm) 40 W MCF/A (linear fluorescent) lamps. The Siemens-Ediswan branding identifies that this lantern was produced towards the end of that decade, as earlier examples carried Siemens Brothers or, simply, Siemens, branding instead. Siemens-Ediswan was part of the larger AEI (Associated Electrical Industries) conglomerate, which became part of GEC in 1967, and the street lighting division was absorbed by Thorn Electrical Industries at this time. Fellow collector Claire Pendrous photographed another of these Court lanterns while the Cattle Market still existed, along with two others that were nearby. These were still extant in 2018, as this Google imagery shows, but had gone by 2020.

Despite the column being around 70 years old when photographed, it is in remarkable condition, with very little rusting being evident along the shaft.

The lantern all still appears to be intact, despite the likelihood of it remaining in operation at night being extremely low, though it would look astounding if it did!

The maker's name is cast into the rear section of the lantern.

Some slight damage exists to the front of the lantern, although this probably could be repaired. Notice the thumbscrew used to secure the bowl to an internal fixing during normal operation.

The bowl would hinge towards the column during maintenance. Lamps are still visible within the bowl - awaiting that day in the future when, hopefully, the lantern might be saved, and can be run again.
