Hadleigh Road Industrial Estate, Westbourne, Ipswich, Suffolk With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Installed throughout the Industrial Estate are several notable lighting installations in various shapes and sizes, and from a variety of eras.
Probably the oldest installation on the estate is this 25 ft (8 m) Concrete Utilities' Avenue 3D column with side-entry Arc 2 bracket and Crompton Lion lantern, dating from the 1950s, and visible from Brunel Road. The same compound that houses this column contains several other Avenue 3D columns, but sadly, these others have been sleeved, and floodlights installed on the replacement brackets.
This installation too has seen better days, with a portion of concrete missing from the top of the column shaft, and another on the underside of the bracket, near the lantern attachment.
The Lion features a distinctive stepped Holophane 4119 glass refractor bowl.
Arkwright Road is home to this Thorn Gamma 5 attached to a 15 ft (5 m) Thorn 'Lucerna' aluminium column. A later Gamma 6 is visible in the background, and beyond that, the remains (i.e. a base casting attached to an ELECO 'Silverline aluminium column) of a second Gamma 5 are visible.
As the Lucerna column was also a Thorn product, a special Gamma 5 base casting could be used that screwed onto the column, and then the rest of the lantern bolted into it. This particular Gamma 5 features a slightly stippled acrylic bowl.
Just off Whittle Road, in a private car park, is an AEI / Atlas / Thorn 'Leader 15ST' aluminium column (the 'ST' suffix seems to be for when a bracket is fitted) and AEI Amber Minor / Atlas / Thorn Beta 5.
The ST bracket features a spigot that fits the triangular profile of the Leader column.
The bowls on these early Beta 5s are notoriously fragile, and as can be seen, this one shows multiple areas of damage.
Another private installation that exists a little further down Whittle Road is a 25 ft tubular steel column with a fairly lengthy outreach bracket and GEC Z8591 lantern.
The Z8591 is an unusual choice for this mounting height; it being intended for installation at lower heights.
Unlike the later Z8896 lantern, the Z8591 features a distinctive raised spigot entry section in its canopy.
