Off Worcester Street, New Bilton, Newbold-on-Avon, Rugby, Warwickshire With thanks to 'Aleksander' for informing me of these Survivors. Situated on waste ground that was once home to two gas holders, and more recently, a vehicle hire depot, followed by a hand car wash, are two 1980s' Abacus base-hinged 10 m tubular columns, both fitted with a twin-arm bracket and Thorn Alpha 3s, with the lamp control gear housed within the lanterns on this occasion - the lamp options being 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour), SON (high pressure sodium), and, more rarely, MBI (metal halide) lamps. The columns must post-date the site's use as a gasworks, as this closed in 1970, following the change to the use of natural gas, and the majority of the buildings cleared fourteen years later - this is possibly also when the columns were erected. The site is earmarked (as of 2018) to be redeveloped for housing, though no evidence of work commencing any time soon existed when these pictures were taken in May 2026.

With the site having lain derelict since some point after 2016, buddleia bushes have grown around the entrance - I had to position my camera on top of the perimeter security fence to capture these images.

The bowl is missing from the foreground left-hand lantern, although a lamp remains intact within the lantern.

The size of the lamp suggests that it is probably 400 Watt.

A small pool of trapped rainwater exists in the other lantern.

The background lanterns, complete with feathered visitor, are also both intact. The bracket here is in noticeably poorer condition, oddly.

A section of the gasket strip has fallen down inside the left-hand lantern.

Don't you hate it when you close your eyes for just a brief moment, only for some twit with a camera to turn up, and start wanting to take pictures!
